At Bearnes Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum is an exciting and engaging journey that fosters creative, confident and resilient problem-solvers. We provide a progressive, hands-on learning experience that builds core skills and technical knowledge from EYFS through to KS2. In EYFS, children explore and experiment with materials, tools, and techniques fostering their curiosity and early imaginative skills. Moving into KS1, pupils begin to design purposeful, functional, and appealing products based on design criteria. This learning culminates in KS2, where children use research to inform their designs, generate and communicate ideas through annotated sketches and prototypes, and select from a wider range of tools and materials with greater accuracy to make more complex products. They also learn to critically evaluate their work by considering the views of others and applying their understanding of how key events in design have shaped the world. Our projects are fun, exciting, and sometimes take place on immersive collapsed days to allow for deep, focused engagement, providing ample time for children to develop their skills, use tools safely, and plan their work with increasing confidence. Through this process, children are encouraged to think for themselves, take creative risks, and find innovative solutions. The successes of our budding designers and engineers are celebrated and shared throughout the school, ensuring every child feels a sense of pride and accomplishment in their creative achievements.
