Maths

At Bearnes Voluntary Primary School, we want every child to become a confident, capable and curious mathematician. Our aim is for all pupils to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, secure fluency in number and the confidence to reason, solve problems and apply their learning in a range of contexts.

Our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced from Nursery to Year 6, building on prior knowledge and developing the skills and understanding children need for the next stage of their learning. We use White Rose Maths to support our planning, alongside the National Curriculum and Ready to Progress criteria, ensuring that learning is purposeful, connected and progressively challenging.

In lessons, children develop their understanding through clear explanations, teacher modelling, guided practice and opportunities to work independently. We place a strong emphasis on mathematical talk, encouraging pupils to explain their thinking, justify their answers, make connections and learn from mistakes. Fluency, reasoning and problem-solving are woven throughout our curriculum, so that all children are challenged to deepen their understanding.

We believe that effective assessment is essential to helping every child succeed. Teachers continually check pupils’ understanding, identify misconceptions and address gaps in prior learning through responsive teaching, targeted practice and opportunities to revisit key concepts. Regular assessment helps us recognise what children know, identify what they need to learn next and ensure that learning builds securely over time.

Above all, we want our children to see mathematics as meaningful, interesting and relevant to everyday life. We encourage resilience, curiosity and a willingness to tackle challenges, so that every pupil can develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy mathematics and use it successfully in the future.
