As role models for younger children, Redwoods take their whole school responsibilities seriously; they are expected to model excellent behaviour, a positive attitude towards school and learning, and take pride in their work at all times.
Learning in Redwoods is engaging and challenging. Redwoods children are exposed to a variety of teaching styles which ensure all children are excited and enthused in their learning, make the maximum possible progress while also developing independence.
Mr Abraham teaches Redwoods.
PE lessons are every Wednesday with Mrs Bamber (PE teacher).
Please ensure that PE kit is worn to school on these days.
Homework is designed to encourage independence. Our expectations are as follows:
- Reading on a daily basis (minimum of 15 minutes per day)
- Spellings taken from the Y5/6 and/or Y3/4 list (follow links below)
- Times Tables practice - this should include at least 15 x 1 minute sessions on TT Rock Stars (children all have their unique user ID and password which can be used to access from home)
- Project learning themed around our termly topic where the children will be able to choose from a range of activities designed to take their learning out of the classroom.
Dear Redwoods parents,
It’s been another busy week delving into our new units of learning while Year 6 prepare for their SATs. Year 6 students will be taking their mock SATs next week where we will aim to replicate the SATs environment as closely as we can to help the children be well prepared for May 12th!
In English, we have started reading the book Beowulf by Kevin Crossley-Holland and learning about the structure of ‘Overcoming the Monster’ stories. In maths, students are learning about ratio, including ratio language and symbols and how it connects to fractions. In science, we are exploring the circulatory system and the key body parts involved.
In Art, Redwoods have been learning all about different artworks and artists from a range of times and cultures. The children chose two pieces of artwork to explore more deeply and compare the two artists' techniques, use of colour and composition.
On Wednesday, Year 5 will be visiting Newton Abbot Racecourse to take part in some learning workshops with Racing to School, a charity that uses the setting of horse racing to deliver curriculum-linked learning activities for young people. Their work helps children by making education more engaging through hands-on experiences at racecourses, supporting subjects like maths, science, and literacy in a real-world context. Racing to School places the safety of all participating children as a top priority. Their experienced staff work closely with our trip leaders to ensure thorough safeguarding measures are in place. Any contact with the public is minimal and always supervised, with events held at quieter race meetings. Pupils are supported by both school staff and racecourse personnel throughout the day. As well as learning in a safe outdoor setting, children will also explore topics such as animal welfare, guided by Racing to School’s knowledgeable team.
Well done to our star of the week, James, who has improved his independent reading skills using AR.
For home learning, children should:
- Read for at least 20 minutes daily and write it in their Reading Record
- Practise their times tables using https://ttrockstars.com for at least five minutes every day
- Finish any outstanding maths tasks assigned on https://www.maths.co.uk/
- Complete the reading comprehension task about VE Day.
- Y6 students: Complete the SATs arithmetic paper.
Have a great long weekend,
Mr. Abraham
